History of Udaipur
Maharana Udai Singh II founded Udaipur in 1568 after his citadel Chittorgarh was seized by Mughal Emperor Akbar. Udaipur is the jewel of Mewar, a kingdom ruled by the Sisodia dynasty for 1200 years. The foundation of the city has interesting legend, associated with it. According to it, Maharana Udai Singh II, the founder, was hunting one day, when he met a holy man meditating on a hill overlooking the Lake Pichola. The hermit blessed the Maharana and advised him to build a palace at this favorably located spot with a fertile valley watered by the stream, a lake, an attitude and an amphitheatre of low mountains, Maharana followed the advised of the hermit and founded the city in 1559 AD. Surrounded by Aravali Ranges, Forests & lakes this place was less vulnerable than Chittorgarh.
Places to visit in Udaipur
THE CITY PALACE MUSEUM (4 kms - Timings: 9am to 4.30pm)
The palace is housed with many antique articles, paintings, decorative furniture and utensils and attracts thousands of visitors every day.
CRYSTAL GALLERY (4 kms - Timings: 9am to 7.30pm)
It’s a museum overlooking the Darbar Hall of Fateh Prakash Palace & houses Mewar’s famous crystal collection.
SAHELIYON KI BADI (8 kms - Timings: 8am to 6pm)
This Small ornament garden was popular relaxing sport where royal ladies came for a stroll and hence the name. The Garden has many fountains in its four delightful pools, chiseled kiosks and marble elephants.
FATEH SAGAR (6 kms)
This delightful artificial lake boarded by hills and woodland. A canal links Lake Pichola to Fateh Sagar via Swaroop Sagar Lakes. The beautiful Nehru Garden on an island as well as an islet bearing a solar observatory rises from the lake.
SAJJAN GARH FORT (15 kms - Timings: 9.30am to 5.30pm)
Sajjan Garh Wildlife Sanctuary surrounds the Sajjangarh palace. From the Palace, one can have a magnificent view of lakes of Udaipur and Aravali Hill ranges. The view of sunrise and Sunset attracts ever visitor atop the Bansdara hill.
BHARTIYA LOK KALA MANDAL (8 kms)
The main objective of the Institute is to conduct studies on the folk art, songs and festivals of regions like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh etc. The institute has a puppet unit that trains children, teachers and other artists in the art of puppetry, as this is a very powerful non-conventional educative medium. It also boasts of regular performances that are a feast to behold.
BAGORE KI HAVELI & MUSEUM (5 kms - Timings: 10am to 5.30pm)
Situated on the picturesque bank of Pichola Lake, this palatial building reportedly has 138 rooms, balconies, terraces, courtyards and corridors. The glass and mirror inlay within the Haveli is unique and procured in its original form. The two peacocks made with small pieces of colored glasses are unique reflection of the finest craftsmanship of glass work. What was once upon a time a living centre of nobility of Udaipur lay in darkness and ruin for nearly half a century till when it was handed over to the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC) in 1986. Every day from 7:00pm to 8:00pm captivating Dharohar dance show is held.
SHIPAGRAM ARTISAN’S VILLAGE (10 kms - Timings: 11am to 7pm)
It is a living ethnographic museum depicting life style, traditions, customs and folk arts of the rural and tribal people of the states of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Daman, etc. The Shilpgram Utsav organized every year from 23rd December to January 1st, attracts massive crowd creating a scene of rural market fair and festival with live performances of folk artists from different parts of the Country. The Terracotta Museum, the museum of masks, folk and musical instruments are of particular attraction.
MAHARANA PRATAP MEMORIAL, MOTI MAGRI (7 kms - Timings: 9am to 6pm)
One of the beautiful parks located over the Fateh Sagar Lake it has the statue of Maharana Pratap Singh, a Musical Fountain and model resemblance of Haldi Ghati and Chittorgarh.
ROPE WAYS, DUDH TALAI (4 kms - Timings: 10 am to 5.30 pm)
You can enjoy the Rope ways in Dudhtalai. It’s located at Lake Pichola which is just 3 kms away from the hotel. Its start from musical fountain and stops at historical Place called Karnimata Mandir.
VINTAGE CAR COLLECTION (4 kms - Timings: 9 am 5:30 pm)
The collection of vintage car by Maharanas of Udaipur is located just 3 kms away from the hotel. The collections are ultimate & worth seeing it.
EKLINGJI, KAILASHPURI (22 kms - Timings: 4.15 am to 6.30 am 10.30 am to 1.30 pm 5.15 pm to 7.45 pm)
A religious complex situated in the north region of Mewar, roughly half-way on the Udaipur – Nathdwara route. It houses 108 temples chiseled out of sandstone and Marble with the most prominent being the temple of Eklingji, built in 734 AD.
This temple was reconstructed as it stands today by Rana Mokul in 1421-1433 AD. It is devoted to Eklingji (a manifestation of Shiva, Deity adored under the epithet of EKLINGA), one of the prominendeities of the Maharanas of Mewar, worshiped as Mahadeva Chaumukhi, the quadric from divinity, represented by a bust with four faces. Enclosed by high walls, its hundred of knots very vividly carved and finely decorated with the colored stones. In front of the entrance of the main temple, there is a beautifully sculpted sacred brazen bull, Nandi (the loyal steed of lord Shiva which has its altar attached to all the shrines devoted to Lord Shiva).
SHRINATHJI, NATHDWARA (48 kms)
Nathdwara literally means the gateway to the Lord. This great Vaishnavite shrine was built in the 17th century on the spot exactly defined by the Lord himself. The legends have it that the priests fled Virandavan with Idol of Lord Shrinathji to protect it from the distructive wrath of Moghul Emperor Aurangzeb. Rana Raj Singhji -I period 1653-1680, who was ruling Mewar then, gave shelter to the Idol of Shrinathji where other rulers, fearing to displease the Emperor, refused a safe haven. While the Idol was being transferred to a safer place by bullock cart, the wheel of the cart sank axle deep in mud and refused to move further. The accompanying priest realized that this was the Lord’s chosen spot and the Idol did not want to travel any further. Accordingly a temple was built here. Timings: The temple opens for darshan at short intervals starting from early morning but the longest period is from 11.30 am to 12.15 pm for Raj Bhog.
